Family donate model for Ossett Memorial feature

Victory in Europe (VE) Day traditionally marks the end of the Second World War in 1945, when Germany’s surrender was accepted by Britain on May 8.

Ossett historians Steve Wilson and Alan Howe maintain biographies of the 93 Ossett men and women who gave their lives in this conflict at www.ossett.net.

There is also some recognition of men from Horbury and Middlestown.

The family of an Ossett WW2 airman who died during an air raid over Europe got in touch with Mr Wilson after reading the biography of their relative and seeing several pictures of the Ossett War Memorial.

“The model of the Lancaster bomber was donated and sent to me,” he said.

“The family asked for it to be placed on the war memorial in memory of all the Ossett airmen who gave their lives during WW2.”

The Royal British Legion representative, Harry Wakefield placed a memorial piece featuring the model at the Ossett site on VE Day last week.

Council results reflect national outcome

Labour’s Darren Byford has been returned as Horbury and South Ossett Ward Councillor by just 161 votes, while Lyn Mastermann was replaced by Tory Tony Homewood with 2,395 votes in Ossett.

The result reflects the overall pattern at Wakefield Council.

Labour still retains majority, but the Conservatives have made significant gains to reduce this. Labour holds 11 of the 18 seats they were defending.

They gained two seats from vacancies: one held by an independent, another previously held by Labour.

They lost six seats to the Conservatives, who held both the seats they were defending.

The Liberal Democrats gained one seat from Labour.The make-up of the Council is as follows: Labour 42 seats, Conservative 18 seats, Liberal Democrats two seats.

Mr Byford’s campaign focused on local issues that directly affect Horbury and South Ossett residents.

“It was a positive campaign showing what we as a community can achieve. It was based on achievements not negativity,” he said.

Since being first elected in May 2016, Mr Byford has worked with community groups to deliver change.

“There is an amazing community spirit in Horbury and South Ossett and I have been able to offer them help and support,” he said.

Mr Byford hopes to deliver “more of the same” from “listening, understanding and then getting on with it.”

Horbury’s Conservative John Allum received 2070 votes, with Liberal Mark Goodair obtaining 174 and Green Richard Norris gaining 159.

Conservative Tony Homewood took away over half the vote in Ossett with 2395 votes, outgoing Councillor Lyn Mastermann received 1729, Green Stephen Scott 220 and Liberal Malcolm Pollack 110.

The voting count at Thorne’s Park Stadium in Wakefield went way into the early hours on Saturday, taking 15 hours with our Wards being some of the earlier decisions.

As we continue to edge back towards normal life it is great to see the Mirfield Bowls League back in full swing…well, almost! There’s plenty of interest in Ossett, Horbury and surrounding villages, with Mirfield League regarded as the country’s best.

If you are wondering why the league is ‘almost’ back in full swing, it’s because we didn’t quite get a full set of games. Around tea-time we tend to see dark clouds brooding overhead.

Why does it always bloody rain on Tuesdays?!

Evidently the torrential downpour was too much for the green up at Pudsey Bowling Club, with the match called-off and the visitors from Dearne Sports sent back whence they came, dry as a bone, to the Deep South (of Yorkshire).

It’s unusual for a Mirfield League game to fall foul of the weather. We bowlers generally get on with it and, in some cases, we relish the puddles. Particularly if you happen to be playing away, with the home team’s green advantage dumped by the downpours.

A short ride down the hill at Pudsey Littlemoor that’s exactly what happened, with a visit from one of our local sides, Denby Grange. There wasn’t much between the teams overall, with Littlemoor coming away 8-4 to the good.

In a waterlogged first four blocks Jack Bowes and Alex Wolfenden starred for the Pudsey side, winning to 7 and 8 respectively. For the second week running that Overton publican with a strange kneeling delivery, Danny Walker, top-scored for the Grange. He finished 21-13 to the good and with one very very wet knee.

Our other local side in the top-flight, Ossett Flying Horse, entertained visitors from Crossgates at Dewsbury Road. Ex-British Junior Champion, Danny Towning, was the best card for the Fly with a really impressive 21-10 against a tough opponent. Special mention too to Darren ‘Eagle’ Atkinson with a 21-11.

Two big wins from the first two games; the Eagle has landed at the top of the league averages! With a 21-10 victory of his own, Kev Siddle was the pick of the Crossgates winners. The final score – 7-5 to the Fly in a tight-fought contest.

Over in Huddersfield the local derby between Thongsbridge and Crosland Moor ended in a 9-3 triumph for the home team from the Holme Valley. Mark Bramall revelled in the rain, taking the sweep for the title favourites, Thongs, with a 21-8.

Yorkshire stalwart Wayne Moseley replied with 21-11. This being ‘Last of the Summer Wine Country’ rumour has it that Crosland Moor’s three winners were later seen rolling down a hill in a bathtub in search of Nora Batty’s wrinkled stockings.

Talking of local derbies, it doesn’t get more local than Lower Hopton ‘A’ versus Lower Hopton ‘B’. Hopton’s ‘A’ team love it when a plan comes together, beating their clubmates 9-3. Stuart King was the best winner for Hopton ‘A’ with a 21-9. Jimmy Senior played a belting 21-7 for the club’s second string.

In Division 3 last week’s pacesetters, Ossett C&AC had to sit out for a week with a bye due to teams pulling out of the league pre-season. Meanwhile, over at Horbury WMC their tough start to the campaign continued with a 9-3 home defeat at the hands of a strong-looking Cleckheaton Sports. Callum Fennel’s 21-10 against a very experienced Yorkshire county legend was Horbury’s best card on the night. The pick of the Cleck wins was John Wilson with 21-8.

It didn’t go to plan up in Overton either, with Denby Grange ‘B’ suffering a 10-2 home defeat to Broad Oak. Mark Rushworth and Richard Quarmby banged in 21-7 wins for the visitors in the wet. Denby’s Darren ‘Snake’ Pitchforth slithered to his own 21-7 for the home team.

As I write this the result of our other local side in Division 4 is still a mystery. Ossett Flying Horse ‘B’ were away at Kirkheaton. I know that’s out in the sticks, a bit short of internet signal maybe. Never mind – maybe the carrier pigeon will arrive in time for me to report on that game next week!

Counting continues to elect local councillors

It’s too close to call the final results of the Wakefield District Council elections, which were held yesterday.

Once results are confirmed, we will profile the issues our local government representatives from Horbury and South Ossett (HSO), as well as Ossett Wards will be rallying for.

The Liberal Democrats, Conservatives and Greens put up candidates vowing to break the Labour stronghold, as Labour traditionally dominate the Wakefield Council with 63 seats.

Tony Homewood in Ossett and Jonathon Allum in HSO supported Conservative MP’s Imran Kahn’s conservative line. Their party has attacked records on supporting local housing developments, infrastructure and skills development.

The Labour vote was represented by current councillors Darren Byford and Lynn Masterman. They campaigned very hard, reminding voters of all the community’s wins in their respective electorates since they took office.

HSO Liberal Democrats Mark Goodair’s campaign was offset when he scorned Wakefield in a debate on The Big Yorkshire Phone In on BBC Leeds. Malcolm Pollack was his Ossett party comrade towing the national line of “being forward-looking, modern, green, internationalist and pro-European”.

Richard Norris and Stephen Scott represent the Greens, aiming to break the two party hold of local politics. They campaigned to provide a “district for the future”, declaring there’s a climate emergency and to boost equality. Given the diversity in polling topics, the result is sure going to be interesting.

How did you get into this business? Researched for about 18 months, it matches my EA/PA background and then lost my job so went all in.

What do you enjoy most about your business? Helping business owners to find more time and stop doing the stuff they don’t like or don’t want to do.

If you had one piece of advice for someone just starting out in business, what would it be? Be all in, try everything and ask everyone questions, there’s so much support out there.

Ossett United Supporters’ Lockdown Project

The winter months of lockdown have dragged, haven’t they?

We’ve all found new ways of filling our time at home and I suppose our house has been a bit stereotypical.

I’ve learned how to make artisan bread, my wife has been making facemasks and our crafty daughter is knitting for England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales.

Meanwhile, the good folk at Ossett United Supporters’ Club have been hard at work at a lockdown project of their own.

The Supporters’ Club Can Bar used to be a sparse but welcoming upstairs, a portacabin overlooking the Ingfield pitch.

Thanks to an army of volunteers it has been transformed during lockdown into the coolest vantage point in non-league football. A new, state-of-the-art bar has been installed and the walls adorned with colourful memorabilia, kindly donated by supporters from Ossett and beyond.

The club chose the new bar as venue to announce manager Wayne Benn’s first signing ahead of the new season, former Leeds United and Stockport County defender Ross Killock.

Ross has also worn the shirts of Chester City and Scarborough Athletic.

“[Ross Killock] is just the calibre of player I am looking to bring to Ingfield. At 26, he has a lot of experience and at a higher level. I expect Ross will be a leader both on and off the field.”

For Killock it wasn’t a difficult decision to make once he knew of the interest. “I’ve heard a lot of good things about the club, especially the fanbase, who clearly follow the club in large numbers. I cannot wait to get started and play my part in seeing the club pushing forwards on the field,” he said.

Risky way to raise money

Thirty four brave Wakefield Hospice supporters have raised £5,000 for the charity after completing the Firewalk Challenge on Thursday April 22. This was the first ‘live’ event in over 12 months, and finally took place after being postponed three times due to the pandemic.

The money raised will go to support local families who are receiving care from Wakefield Hospice, as well as other events and efforts taking place now. Wakefield Hospice has continued to provide end of life care within the hospice and offered telephone and virtual support in place of the day therapy services throughout the last year.

Like all charities Wakefield Hospice’s income was hugely affected by the closure of shops and being unable to host many of their usual events. If you would like to know more about Wakefield Hospice and how to get involved please visit www.wakefieldhospice.org.

Wins in both senior divisions

In the return to the crease for 2021, there’s hopes for a decent season and premiership after restrictions and lockdown last year.

The Ossett CC has been back for three rounds now, with a mixed performance for all sides.

Steve Coulthard claimed a superb five-wicket haul to help guide his side to victory in their round three match against Birstall at The Venue on Saturday.

He claimed 5 for 55 in 14 overs after Ossett’s respectable performance at the crease, reaching 245 before the 45th over.

Michael Edwards continued his magnificent form scoring 102 from 107 balls before getting caught and bowled by Birstall’s Daniel Marlow.

Brad Wood (50 from 67), wicket keeper Myles Wood (32 from 27) and Coulthard (24 from 40) led the homeside’s batting.

Coulthard caught Birstall’s James Misty out for captain Conor Andrews with the score 2/32, before taking to the batting order.

He dismissed Birstall captain Lee Peters (47 from 89), Bobby McFarlane (17 from 35), Sam Isles (13 from 28), Harvey Flathers (19 from 24) and Connor Teale who faced 6 balls to no avail.

Ossett’s Leigh Learie finished off the lower order, bowling Alex Drake (8 from 20) and Birstall wickie Jamie Hanson (12 from 24). Richard Ryan scored 1 run and Daniel Marlow managed 3 before they finished 9/144 at the end of their 45 overs.

His 2nd division against Wakefield St Michaels CC at home next Saturday, with this win tipping the form guide in Ossett’s favour.

Birstall 1st division edged Ossett out by 10 runs on Saturday in the Priestley Cup.

They scored 232/8 in their 50 overs, after Ossett won the toss and elected to field.

James Keen starred for 1st Division scored 46 from 42 balls when Ossett’s turn came.

They ended up all out 219 in 41.2 overs, which was revised to 230 from 42.

Ossett followed up to win by 29 runs on Sunday, in a home match against Cleckheaton.

The visitors won the toss and sent Ossett in to score a honourable 214 all out after 30 overs. Sajith Warnakulasuriya (76 from 30) was Ossett’s star, scoring 8 sixes and 5 fours.

Joseph Finnigan (64 from 47) and George Hadfield (19 from 38) also helped the score climb.

When Ossett took to the field, Max Chappell took 3 wickets for 9 runs in 6 overs and Dan Busfield took 2 wickets for 34 runs in 7 overs.

1st Division face Carlton CC in Wakefield next week, with the leading form going into the match.

Meet your Neighbour - Rob Carroll

Meet Rob…

How long have you lived here? I live just a short ride away, but I spend a large part of both my work and social lives in and around Ossett and Horbury.

What do you love most about Ossett and Horbury? They are two really tight-knit communities with lots of great small businesses. It’s so nice to walk along a high street and see lots of independent shops happily living side-by-side with the bigger national names. Not many town centres have a book shop, a wool shop, a cobbler and an independent hardware store.

What does a typical day look like for you? Aside from work I try to get out for a walk or bike ride most days. The Greenway is great to have on your doorstep for a lunchtime stroll. You might also find me battling with my weeds at my allotment.

Where’s your favourite place to eat, and why? I’ve probably been back to Niko’s Greek Restaurant in Ossett most often. Again, you don’t find Greek food in many towns. My wife worked in Greece for many years and we adore Greek food. It’s such a welcoming atmosphere too.

Where’s your favourite place to meet friends, and why? I play bowls in my spare time up in Overton at Denby Grange. A team-mate is the landlord of the Black Swan and you’ll generally find us there.

What’s your favourite sports team, and why? Aside from Denby Grange Bowling Club, it would have to be Ossett United. I love Ingfield, it’s a great community club and there is potential to go higher with such a great fanbase.

Bowls is Back!

As we continue to edge back towards normal life, it was great to see the Mirfield Bowls League return with plenty of interest in Ossett, Horbury and surrounding villages.

To the uninitiated the Mirfield League is regarded by many as the best in the country, pitting top Yorkshire bowlers against eachother as well as travelling stars from further afield.

The season started with a local derby up the hill in Overton, with newly promoted Denby Grange entertaining Ossett Flying Horse. After a tense and tight encounter Denby more than edged it in the end, running out 9-3 winners. Top scorer for the visitors from the Fly with 21-10 was Darren ‘Eagle’ Atkinson, whereas local publican Danny Walker starred with a 21-9 win for the home team. The beers were flowing outside the Black Swan later on.

Down in South Yorkshire the points were shared, Dearne Sports winning 7-5 after a close battle with Lower Hopton. South Yorkshire county man Rob Wiltshire top-scored for Dearne with an impressive 21-11. Of the Hopton lads Yorkshire’s Liam Griffin found the green most to his liking, with a 21-16 victory.

In the Leeds derby Crossgates came out on top, recording a 9-3 home win against Pudsey Littlemoor. Jonny Wood starred with a 21-9 for the ‘Gates. Littlemoor’s top performer was the experienced Mark Allman with 21-11. After a few years out Allers must feel he is banging on the Yorkshire door to get his county place back.

Over in Huddersfield Crosland Moor edged Pudsey BC 7-5, with Liam Fallas recording a 21-7 for the ‘Moor. Of the Pudsey players, Yorkshire starlet Josh Mordue and Jonny ‘The Pink’ Edmondson both carded impressive 21-11 wins. Jon’s story is worth telling. After a successful and colourful county career, illness struck. Unable to use his right hand to bowl, Jon switched to playing left-handed and has battled his way back to the top division.

Lower Hopton is a strong enough club to field two sides in the top-flight. It was a tough opener for Hopton B, though, going down 3-9 at home to current title-holders Thongsbridge. Graham ‘Flicker’ Hickey shot out of the traps with a 21-10 for Hopton. Thongsbridge and South Yorkshire’s Mr Reliable, Richard Jackson, replied with a 21-10 of his own for Thongs.

Division 3 started with a bang and a red-hot local derby, with Ossett C&AC hosting Horbury WMC in the opening fixture. It was a real statement of intent from a very strong looking Ossett Cricket, running out 12-0 winners in a one-sided contest.

I’m sure Horbury will recover when they get onto home turf, but last Tuesday the spoils were all Ossett’s, with the excellent local player Rob Dunford scoring a 21-6 victory, Stuart Daniel then joining him in the winners’ enclosure with the same result.

Over at the Fly there was yet another local derby in contest, this time in Division 4 with Ossett Flying Horse B beating Denby Grange’s new B team 9-3 Simon Anderson starred with a 21-3 for Fly, whose B team is peppered with ex-Yorkshire players. Your scribe top-scored with a 21-8 for the Grange.

Healthy habits for a positive outlook in lockdown

If you had intentions to get fit and eat better in 2021, don’t write off the year just yet.

And why wait? Here’s Julie’s advice that will hopefully help you make healthy choices, and convince you not to lie on the lounge binge junk food and Netflix.

Crash diets don’t work, here’s why…

At this time of year many people embark on a ‘fad diet’. This can often lead to a roller coaster of going from one diet to another, creating a feeling of misery, hunger and tiredness.

These diets are about what you can’t eat, which can lead to negative thoughts. A recent study that followed a group of individuals over a two-year period found that 83% of participants gained back more weight than they’d initially lost.

So why don’t they work?

In evolutionary terms, the human body is designed to maintain your weight and that is one of its main focuses. Crash diets do not work long term, FACT!!

Crash diets are not sustainable and are often too low in calories.
This type of diet is often restricted to food choices and can become boring.
Dieting can cause elevated levels of cortisol which can promote weight gain.
They sometimes cut out entire food groups, which is not healthy and can lead to nutritional deficiencies and long-term health issues.
Body metabolism slows down to adjust to the restricted calories. Rather than going into fat burning mode, the body can enter fat storage mode.
Dieting can make you ‘food obsessed’, with food seen as a reward.
Will power alone often is insufficient to keep you on track.

It is important to realise that losing weight will also not necessarily make you ‘healthier’. Dieting can be stressful and doesn’t teach you to eat healthily.

In order to achieve and maintain health for the long term, you need to adopt lifelong healthy habits; thinking about what you can have, turning eating into a positive experience.

Here are my top five tips for long term healthy eating and avoiding crash diets:

Plan ahead

Making the decision what to eat when you’re hungry and tired can be where it all goes wrong.

Eat breakfast and never skip meals

To help keep hunger at bay and balanced blood sugar levels, ensure food consistency. Research shows that people who eat breakfast tend to have a more balanced diet overall.

So, start your day with a healthy breakfast which includes protein e.g. eggs or porridge with nuts and seeds will help you avoid you becoming overly hungry, avoiding snacking before lunchtime.

Portion control

Take a look at your portion sizes as it can be possible to eat too much of a good thing. A good guide is to divide your plate into four quarters.

Fill your plate with a quarter protein and carbohydrates (potato, pasta, rice), with the final half featuring vegetables, salad or fruit.

Exercise

Regular exercise will keep your metabolism high and is key for weight loss. It helps to improve glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity (which can lead to diabetes), burns calories and reduces abdominal fat.

Prioritise your sleep

Sleep is critical in weight management, as it controls the hormones that regulate metabolism and appetite.

Finally, getting the right support and having the right mindset is key to maintain a healthy weight to help you reach your long-term goals for health and happiness.

Ossett United’s Ross Hardaker on life

Continuing our series of Ossett United player interviews, we’ve heard from Ossett lad Ross Hardaker.

__Ross, obviously you’ve been a firm favourite at both Dimple Wells and Ingfield. For the uninitiated, where else have you played in your career so far? __

I was abroad in Germany where I played for SV Avenwedde (a semi-pro club near Gütersloh), then to Arminia Bielefeld. Back in the UK I’ve played for Ossett Town, Huddersfield Town, Grimsby Town, Bradford Park Avenue, Wakefield FC and Ossett Albion.

What were your favourite moments from those 150+ games in an Albion shirt?

It would have to be either the 3-2 win over Ossett Town on Boxing Day (sorry to the Town fans) or the 3-2 win over Salford away just as the class of ‘92 took over.

We had been written off well before the game due to Salford’s signings and wage demands. Plus, playing in front of your idols, especially being a United fan, is something I can take away from the game.

Any favourite moments from your United time since the merger?

Without a doubt winning the county cup in our first season. A big factor for me too is being part of my local town’s movement. I’ve been there at both Ossett clubs during some dark days and to see the club heading into better times…it’s an honour to be a part of it.

Are there any games you’d prefer to forget and why?

I can’t actually remember who we played at home, but I was sent off for a tackle and for being the last man. I just remember having to bail James Knowles and Alex McQuade out after they cocked up. Still, to this day, they owe me the money for the fines!

Who would you say was the biggest influence on your footballing career?

Honestly, I’ve had a couple but the biggest of all would be my mum Debbie. She had me out in the garden, parks, fields and even on the streets with a ball since I could walk. She would be the one who drove me to and from Grimsby six times a week to train and play. If it wasn’t for her I wouldn’t have got to where I am.

Another one would be Steve Kelly, who is a massive part of my footballing journey has taken me from Ossett Town Juniors, got me to Huddersfield and then onto Grimsby. He’s one the best blokes in the game and, unfortunately, he is no longer with us. He is still a massive part of this community though for his time at Ossett Town.

What’s your life like outside football?

I literally do anything I can to keep myself occupied. I live and breathe sport, so if any of my mates suggests a sport we end up playing it - badminton, rugby, tennis, squash and especially golf.

I’m a bit of a nerd when it comes to time off at home. If I’m not doing the cooking I’m sat behind the PlayStation for endless hours. I may have grown up, but you can’t take the child out of me.

On a more serious note, in my spare time or days off from my day-to-day job I am currently detailing and valeting cars, working on a business plan to set up on my own and eventually I’m looking to expand it to full time work.

As an Ossett lad, what’s the best thing about Ossett?

The people. It sounds very cliched, but no matter where you go everyone knows each other, everyone’s pleasant and, most of all, there is no longer a divide between the football teams. It’s nice to have everyone together and trying to get this club as high as possible.

Can you remember the first game you went to?

It was when we lived in Germany. My dad was a police officer in the army and was on duty when Man United came to town for a Champions League game. Mum dragged me out of school, which to me at that age either meant a trip to the dentist or the doctor, but when I got in the car she had a new Man Utd shirt with Beckham on the back. My dad had got us tickets for the quarter finals and, to top the evening off, I even got a picture with David Beckham at the end of the game.

And the last one (not counting Ossett United)?

Again, it was Man United in the Europa League against St Etienne. It wasn’t the best of games but a win’s a win and it sent us on the way to winning the trophy. Who is your favourite footballer?

Paul Scholes, without fail. Just the way he approached the whole game of football. One of the most decorated English footballers and when did you ever hear a bad thing about him other than he can’t tackle. He was never in the paper for the wrong reasons and just made the game look so simple. Effortless at times.

Favourite food/drink…

My favourite food would have to either be spaghetti carbonara or (I know it sounds bad) a Chinese takeaway which is always a weekend treat after football. My favourite drink would be Irn Bru. I have to say that as my gran’s Scottish and whenever she did the big shop it’s all she bought. If I chose an alcoholic drink it would be Ameretto and coke for me.

Your favourite holiday destination…

It’s a tough one, but I would have to say Cuba or Portugal.

Cuba, definitely, for the way you are looked after. I’ve been twice, once with family and the other time with my girlfriend and both times I really enjoyed it. Portugal would be another one for a number of reasons. All year the weather is brill and it has it all, the chill parts, the shopping, family resorts and it’s very good for golfing trips.

When we can travel again, where is the first place you want to go and who with? It would be a log cabin, away with the Mrs, as we were due to be at one before Christmas for our anniversary. It would be nice to be able to get one booked so we can have a well-deserved break together.

What would be your walk-on tune?

‘Free From Desire’ by Gala, just to get the people in the right mood.

The 2021 new year forecast looks more positive than anything we’ve experienced this year.

The following are some suggestions for those who are planning New Year’s resolutions. It’s hard to get the balance right between things we’d actually like to achieve and what we intend to do.

Preparing a list of the goals you wish to accomplish via lifestyle changes you want to make and the things you hope others can make, can be cathartic as well as help you achieve these ambitions.

__Here are the top 10 New Year’s resolutions: 1. Prioritise Family__ In the hustle-bustle of life, we usually don’t get enough time. So, in this new year, reserve time for your loved ones: have a meaningful conversation over the dinner table or have a date night with your significant other.

2. Think health Smoking is well known as a danger to your health. You know smoking causes cancer, so it is high time to quit it from day one. Maybe look at your alcohol intake and be sure to follow up on annual health checks.

3. Break From Your Phone Try to spend more time without your phone every month. Many of us use at least two devices at once. Once you’re aware of your behaviours, and have a break, you’ll have more time to do other things.

4. Yoga and Meditation Living a frenzied life due to work pressure and an unhealthy lifestyle leads to high stress levels. These mindful activities will help you relax and unwind.

5. Give Some Time Take some time out to do charity by donating to charities, sponsoring education, give new clothes to people on the streets or give to food banks.

6. Care For Friends Having friends is one thing. To maintain that connection, make sure you organise regular catch ups. Being around fun, sincere and quality people will help you enjoy your life more.

7. Find Some Time For Yourself It’s an important thing to maintain balance. A facial, walk in the park or anything to relax for half an hour will give back ten fold.

8. Raise Your Voice If you see any wrong around your society, speak up – you could save a life.

9. A Day Without Your Car If you can, walk to work or the shops once a week. It can reduce your global warming footprint (pun intended!) and help you appreciate your neighbourhood.

10. Live Your Dreams Last but not least – do what you want to desire. You only live once. Instead of intending to do things, just do it!

Much Loved Landmark Water Tower is Listed

Wakefield’s landmark neoclassical water tower, which sits on a high ridge and can be seen for miles around, has been listed at Grade II by Historic England, following a campaign by residents and support from the Twentieth Century Society.

C20 Society caseworker Coco Whittaker said: “The 1920’s Gawthorpe Water Tower is a muchloved feature of the Ossett landscape in Yorkshire. We are delighted it has been listed and hope this will ensure it is protected and maintained for the benefit of future generations.”

Chris Burley, who organised the local campaign and submitted the listing application, commented: “I’ve lived close to the tower all my life and seen it as a great local attraction. But this all started with my wife Joanne one day saying, ‘it needs a good paint job, it’s looking tatty.’ We tried a lot of ways to get it done. It needs substantial repairs, and you can’t paint it until then, but there is no funding for this, meaning it would fall apart and then be demolished which we couldn’t see happen. After great success with the local community and a meeting to discuss, we applied to get it listed to save it. Now we can concentrate on repairs and maintenance, then painting.”

Historic England’s listing report states: “As a structure primarily serving a functional purpose one might expect it to simply be utilitarian in design, but instead it is treated architecturally, demonstrating that aesthetic considerations were clearly just as important as functionality. It is clear that the local board intended to make an impressive visual statement reflecting the civic pride of the township in this provision, and the tower’s elegant rotunda design successfully achieves this, with its panelled tank and domed cupola, all in reinforced concrete.

“Stylistically the tower compares very favourably with other listed concrete water towers, including the water tower at Rockwell Green, Somerset (about 1930, Grade II) and the water tower at Goole (completed 1927, Grade II). In a wider context, numerous listed examples of water towers serving private country estates survive, including the ornamental water tower and sun room at Wappingthorn, West Sussex (about 1930, Grade II), which is more like a folly, the near-identically styled tower at St Antony’s Convent, Leweston, Dorset (about 1930, Grade II), and the vernacular dovecotestyle water tower at Lytes Cary, Somerset (about 1934, Grade II), but there are far fewer listed municipal towers. Gawthorpe Water Tower is a notable example of this type of public tower.”

Gawthorpe Water Tower is also of special historic interest in reflecting the developments in public water supply provision that took place in England in the latter half of the 19th century and early 20th century.

Don’t forget to have your say on climate change

There’s still time for the district’s residents, businesses, and school children to share their thoughts and feelings regarding climate change issues.

Wakefield Council made an ambitious and important pledge to become a carbon neutral organisation by 2030 and the newly published Climate Change Action Plan outlines how this promise will be fulfilled.

The Council is asking residents, including business leaders as well as secondary and primary school pupils, for their views on climate change - to gauge levels of understanding regarding the science, perceived impacts, and the importance attributed to climate change related issues by individuals and businesses.

This will help to prioritise and structure future work, whilst also opening effective communication routes to engage with key stakeholder groups and more generally, to keep people updated on progress and opportunities in relation to carbon reduction work for both the organisation and the district as a whole.

Gift of refurbished IT equipment to support learning from home

With the help of local businesses, Wakefield Council is gifting refurbished IT equipment to help children who don’t have access to equipment and wi-fi that enables them to do their schoolwork, including homework, at home.

The situation has become more challenging for these children during the coronavirus pandemic when children were learning from home.

The idea was suggested by young people representing the Build Our Futures Forum and UK Youth Parliament when they presented their findings at the Children and Young People Partnership Board last month. They identified digital poverty as a barrier to many young people accessing education, especially when isolating at home and being expected to undertake school work online.

Liam, a member of the Build Our Futures Forum, said: “This will be a fantastic opportunity to those children and young people, who are less fortunate than others, to access support they need, to have access to their education and ensure that no young person in Wakefield falls behind.”

The scheme was launched on Monday 7 December, backed by a £64,000 council investment and eight local businesses donating IT equipment, which the Council will be able to gift to children who need it most.

The programme will be administered through the Council with children and young people in care being the first group to benefit.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service recruiting volunteers in early 2021

The Yorkshire Ambulance Service will be recruiting volunteer community first responders in early 2021.

The role of a Community First Responder is to provide reassurance, potentially life saving treatment and care for the patients of Yorkshire until the arrival of an ambulance resource.

Volunteers will learn how to administer Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), provide oxygen therapy and complete a full set of observations, along with the policies and procedures of the CFR role and the Yorkshire Ambulance Service.

To be considered for the role you must be over the age of 18, have a full UK driving licence with no more than 3 penalty points, access to a 4WD, be able to pass our recruitment checks which include an enhanced DBS, occupational health assessment and a satisfactory reference, and be able to commit to a minimum of seven hours each week. It is a flexible role that can be completed from home, and you can volunteer 24/7, so times to suit.

The benefits of the role are being able to give something back locally, providing support to a patient in their time of need, when calling 999. Also gaining knowledge and skills in a first aid capacity, potentially saving a life.

A lot of football is about numbers, be it goals scored, points won or the attendance amongst other things, but the number that starts this report is the number of days since Ossett United last took to the field due to the most recent lockdown and restrictions.

Hope the current pause on the Northern Premier League will soon change comes from the news from Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) that supporters, although in limited numbers, can return to non-league grounds.

Riding on this hope, Ossett United manager Wayne Benn arranged a mid-season friendly with Athersley Recreation.

One positive of the enforced break was the opportunity for the players suffering injuries to rest, with key central defenders Jack Cowgill and Eddie Cass both named on the team sheet.

Pre-match no one expected a pretty game with a heavy pitch underfoot but those in the ground, and watching via the live stream, will have been pleasantly surprised by the Ossett United performance with plenty of good football on show.

It was a positive start with United winning an early corner and a new look forward line of Green, Normanton and Dyche causing problems. All three looked lively and it was Normanton who went close with a whipped shot inches wide.

Charlie Farrar in the visitors goal was on top form making a number of key saves to keep the scores level, and it looked for all the world that was how it would be at half time until a free-kick was awarded to Ossett United in the 41st minute.

Green stood over the ball 25 yards from goal, his curling effort looking destined for the top corner until it took a wicked deflection off the wall leaving Farrar no chance as the ball looped into the opposite side of the goal.

Dyche was unlucky not to double the lead as the half time whistle blew with the visiting number one making another point blank save.

Wayne Benn made eight changes at half time, which didn’t change the game’s flow as United continuing to press forward. Reggie Waud doubled the lead as he held off a defender well before firing a well struck shot into the near post.

A third followed soon after from Aaron Haswell, one of the most improved players this season.

Ossett United saw out the game with few problems, but a cameo appearance from the visitors veteran player/manager Shane Kelsey almost brought a consolation goal. Cutting in from the right hand side his well struck shot dipping wickedly just over the cross bar.

It was a good work out for both sides, hopefully we don’t have to wait 49 days for a game again this season.

What is the businesses greatest achievement so far? My greatest achievement so far is having the courage to leave my full-time job and being asked to be an Ambassador for The Shire Bakery.

Tell us about yourself:

Where are you from and how long have you had the business? I’m originally from Scarborough, moved to Ossett in 2015 for work and fell in love with the town. I have been baking for friends and family for the last 8 years but decided to start selling my products at the start of this year.

How did you get into the business? I made my sister a birthday cake 8 years ago and just absolutely loved it. Since then, I have grown my portfolio immensely and spent a lot of time learning and practicing new techniques for all my cakes/treats. I’m completely self-taught and proud of how far I have come.

What do you enjoy most about your business? I love how you start with basic ingredients and end with a masterpiece. I literally get to see all my ideas come to life and I just love it even if it does mean working till 2-3 in the morning some nights - it’s all completely worth it.

If you had one piece of advice for someone just starting out in business? Be prepared to give it everything you have got and more. Attention to detail is king. I have made friends with other online cake creators all over the world and it’s so good to talk with them and bounce ideas around - this really helps.

World’s best eggnog

Eggnog for all seasons! Any brand of liquor is fine, put your spin on it with your favourites. And remember, a little nutmeg goes a long way.

Ingredients: · 1 ¼ cups white sugar · 1 cup dark rum · 1 cup bourbon · 1 cup brandy · 1 pinch salt · 1 teaspoon vanilla extract · 1 pinch ground nutmeg, or to taste · 1 quart half-and-half · 1 pint heavy whipping cream · 5 eggs

Method: Step 1 Mix sugar, rum, bourbon, brandy, salt, vanilla extract, and nutmeg in a blender on medium speed until combined. Transfer liquor mixture to a large bowl.

Step 2 Mix half-and-half cream, and eggs in the blender on low speed until combined. Stir egg-cream mixture into the liquor mixture.

Step 3 Ladle eggnog mixture into the blender in batches; blend on low speed. Transfer blended eggnog to a punch bowl or pitcher. Refrigerate until cold, 1 to 2 hours.

Editor’s Note: This recipe contains raw egg. We recommend that pregnant women, young children, the elderly, and the infirm do not consume raw egg.

Christmas cranberry stuffing

Prep: 30 mins - 40 mins | Cook:40 mins plus 1 hour to soak the cranberries

This festive stuffing brings together all the trimmings in one gorgeous mass.

Ingredients: · 100g dried cranberries · 50ml ruby port · 1 small onion, chopped · 2 rashers unsmoked back bacon, cut into strips · 50g butter · 2 garlic cloves, chopped · 450g sausage meat · 140g fresh white or brown breadcrumbs · 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley · ½ tsp chopped fresh thyme leaves · 140g peeled, cooked chestnuts, roughly chopped · 1 medium egg, lightly beaten

Method STEP 1 Soak the cranberries in the port for an hour. Fry the onion and bacon gently in the butter, until the onion is tender and the bacon is cooked. Add the garlic and fry for another minute or so.

STEP 2 Cool slightly, then mix with all the remaining ingredients, including the cranberries and port, adding enough egg to bind – I find it easiest to use my hands. Fry a knob of stuffing in a little butter, taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary.

STEP 3 To Cook: This stuffing can be baked in a dish, or rolled into balls that will be crisp on the outside and moist inside. To bake, press the stuffing into a greased ovenproof dish in a layer that is around 4cm thick. Bake at 190C/gas 5/fan 170C for about 40 minutes, until browned and, in the case of sausagemeat stuffing, cooked right through. Alternatively, roll into balls that are about 4cm in diameter. Roast the stuffing balls in hot fat (they can be tucked around the turkey or done in a roasting tin of their own) for 30-40 minutes, until crisp and nicely browned on the outside.

Carers acknowledged with pamper packs

It was a rainy and cold Saturday and I was hoping to put a smile on certain peoples’ faces. Staff at two care homes in my ward, Ossett and Gawthorpe, were about to receive a nice surprise which I hoped they’d enjoy.

In July of this year, I had delivered ‘Superhero’ cupcakes to the staff in York House which cares for 20 adults with physical and intellectual disabilities, including some with complex needs and Croft House Care Home who provide residential care for our elderly.

They work so hard caring for people throughout the pandemic and I felt that they deserved some recognition and praise for what they thought was just a job, caring for people is such a worthy vocation.

So, with Christmas coming up fast I wanted to show again that they were not forgotten and that their dedication throughout two lockdowns was appreciated. I had the idea to give them something that would be a treat for them and thought that giving ‘pampering packages’ would be welcomed by the staff.

I asked my GMB Union to sponsor the packages and they were only too glad to help, it was such a worthy cause.

I reached out to Jenna Fan and the Ossett Local Vocals to see if they would be willing to come along and sing a couple of carols and Santa. The choir were fabulous. After signing carols, Santa delivered the goodies. The staff couldn’t have been more appreciative, and the residents also thoroughly enjoyed the singing and some joined in.

Off then to Croft House Care Home to do it all again!

Santa did his stuff and delivered the packages to the carers who were beaming from ear to ear, some had tears in their eyes, they were so moved.

The choir then sang beautifully, with staff and residents enjoying the carols. I think it’s very important to recognise the fabulous work that our carers do and give them praise and recognition for their work throughout such strange and unprecedented times.

This was my way of doing that, they do such a worthy and unsung job in our community.

I couldn’t have done it without the support from the GMB Union, two of their officers came along to the deliveries, the help of Jenna and the Community Choir and Santa himself AKA Kevin Musgrave, they too deserve my thanks.

Ossett Sainsbury's raffle celebrates new charity partner

Sainsbury’s South Parade in Ossett has recently formed a new food donation partnership with ‘The Real Junk Food Project’ (charity# 1160107).

They are collecting donations, with a collection bin in store for customers as well as gifting points at tills. This cash is then translated directly into food donations.

The team also donate any stock we have that we are unable to sell to customers for various reasons.

To celebrate this new partnership, and offer something a little fun to our customers with this unusual Christmas on the horizon, we decided to start this raffle.

Horbury’s local history brought into the modern day with the QR Code Trail

The QR Code Trail was created by Horbury Civic Society, in conjunction with Horbury and Sitlington History Group, Horbury and District Historical Society, Horbury Village Partnership and Wakefield Council.

The first 17 locations were agreed, mainly around the conservation area (town centre), which followed an older Town Trail, and the plaques were put in place in October 2019.

When scanned with a smartphone, each code takes you to a short summary on the Civic Society website. For many of the plaques there is then a link to further information on horburyhistory.org.

You can find out about the history of the old House of Mercy to Horbury Working Members Club and many shops, churches and pubs in between.

The Civic Society were all set to begin phase two of the trail, installing 20 more plaques, before the first lockdown in March. Hopefully, we will be able to continue next year.

QR Codes are ideal for a history trail because people have instant access to information. The plaques also ‘flag up’ that there is something interesting to be learned, whether you are a first time visitor or a life-long resident.

I was born and brought up in Horbury, attending school in the town.

I have always loved my hometown of Horbury but getting involved in researching its history has made it even more special.

United chairman shares about life on and off the football field

As we wait for the return of football, we continue to interview Ossett United players, volunteers and club officials.

United Chairman James Rogers has spared some time to answer a few questions about how his interest in the game formed and a bit about life away from Ingfield.

James, can you remember the first game you went to? I’m told my Great Grandad took me to my first Leeds game when I was just six months old. The first game I went to under my own steam was Leeds v Huddersfield Town in the League Cup in 1982. Leeds lost 1-0 but to be there in the kop with my mates for the first time was an occasion I will never forget.

And the last one (not counting Ossett United)? By a very strange coincidence the last game I attended was also a Leeds v Huddersfield Town game in March. This time Leeds ran out well deserved 2-0 winners.

What’s your favourite food/drink? That’s easy, my homemade and very spicy chilli con carne and a bottle of red wine.

What’s your favourite holiday destination? I have many favourites - give me sun, food and beer or wine and I’m happy wherever I am in the world.

When restrictions are lifted, where’s the first place you would go to and with whom? That’s easy, Cheltenham racecourse with my wife Dawn.

__Time to dream now, what would be your walk-on tune if you were in the OUFC squad? Livin’ On a Prayer by Bon Jovi.

What, for you, is the best thing about Ossett? Ingfield.

Can you tell us who you look up to most in life and why? My Mum. She did everything she could for me and my sister until her early passing at the tender age of 46. Whilst I’ve not been able to speak to her now for 27 years, she is still someone I look up to and I hope I am making her proud.

Finally, any message for the OUFC faithful during these strange and testing times? It’s tough for everyone at the minute so let’s all support one another and stick together and get through this - stronger together!

How long have you lived here? I’ve lived in Horbury for five and half years.

What do you like best about Horbury and Ossett? It’s my home village - my family and friends are all here and there’s such a lovely community spirit.

What does your typical day look like? I’m lucky enough to be a stay at home mum to my two girls, aged 3 and 1. So I have a different day every day really. I mostly do the morning nursery school run and lots of walks, crafting, park trips, playing games etc normal family activities. When the girls are in bed I love to knit and get the sewing machine out or do a jigsaw.

Where’s your favourite place to eat? Ego at the Bulls Heads - I’ve never had a bad meal there and love the two-for-one cocktails.

Where’s your favourite place to meet friends, and why? I think the park opposite the High School, especially now there’s the new path around the top field so there’s longer walks to go on.

Where’s your favourite place to shop and why? Darling Reads, I’m so happy we have a book shop open again in the village.

Are you a member of, or do you support, any of the local organisations? I am a member of the Horbury Street and Craft Fayre Committee which we sadly had to cancel this year which would have been my second year in the committee. I play Rugby for Ossett Ladies WRFC and I am also the registrar of the under 13s girl’s WRFC team which we are hoping to get going next year.

The day set out well. I was prepared but also nervous, unsure what was ahead.

I set off well-paced and strong, yet the weather decided to make it more of a challenge. It rained, was foggy and really cold through the night.

The support I received from people offering to run ahead of me and keep me going was amazing. Every time I checked my phone the donations kept growing.

By the morning, my legs were very sore and it was a really unkind game to finish.

The last few runs I could barely run at all and turned into power walks. Summary totals: 99,000 steps done, 12,800 calories burnt, 24 runs, 52.4 miles run

I was very glad of the breakfast in the morning and slept 9am-6pm afterwards.

So far, I have reached £1,015 which to say my target was £150 is amazing.

I want to thank everyone involved, those who donated and those who shared my posts to get the word out. This money will go to a great charity who can literally save a life.

When was it established? We opened on 22nd July 2020, right in the middle of a pandemic!

What is the businesses greatest achievement so far? Managing to survive in these very challenging times!

Where are you from and how long have you had the business? Both from Wakefield, and we established the business in March 2020 with online sales until we opened the shop in July.

How did you get into the business? Fate! Asher worked at Rickaro Books (the previous bookshop) and decided to take over when it was sold. Laura was on maternity leave from teaching at the time and a chat over coffee developed into a total career change.

What do you enjoy most about your business? Being surrounded by books every day, and chatting to like-minded customers about all things books.

How do you unwind on weekends? Drink gin and read books!

If you had one piece of advice for someone just starting out in business? Do it! Follow your instincts and be prepared to work hard.

Wakefield Hospice Christmas fundraising: two for one chocolates and tree collection

Wakefield Hospice has two great initiatives to help celebrate Christmas with our community in mind.

Their ‘Buy Once, Give Twice’ appeal to raise funds for the charity and show appreciation for Pinderfields Hospital staff working across the Christmas season.

The charity has put together gifts of chocolates and are asking the community to sponsor them for £3 each.

The donation will help fund Wakefield Hospice and the chocolates will be passed on to the hospital staff.

Their team can take care of your Christmas tree in the New Year with their tree collection service this festive season.

You’ll get your tree collected for £10.

This saves you the effort of taking it to the tip and from having all those pesky pine needles to clean out from the back of your car.

Even better, you will be helping local families as your donation will support the work of Wakefield Hospice.

Collections will start on Thursday 7 January 2021 and will be completed by Thursday 14 January 2021.

‘Tis the season to create waste

Christmas is just around the corner — it’s the time when we annually overeat, overspend and produce more waste than any other time of the year.

As a country, we produce 30% more waste over Christmas. The equivalent of two million turkeys are thrown away every year.

Our celebrations don’t have to cost the earth. Together we can make a big difference, without losing any of the Christmas magic.

Wrapping, ribbons, plastic trees and decorations are in abundance in the lead-up to Christmas, but often end up in landfill once the fun is over.

A little creativity goes a long way when it comes to wrapping presents. You can use old newspapers and magazines, or last year’s wrapping paper perhaps, even old linen.

Gift bags can be reused time and time again. However, if people are receiving gifts that have paper wrapping, then just remember you can either reuse it next year or make sure you recycle it in your kerbside bin.

Wrapping paper can be recycled, but plastic cellophane or metallic wrapping goes to landfill, as does tinsel. Tinsel is plastic, so avoid it if possible. Otherwise make sure it’s being used year after year.

There are wooden decorations at a lot of arts and crafts stores, you could make your own if you’re crafty. Get the kids involved as well!

Up to 8 million Christmas trees are bought every December in the UK alone, which is a lot of intense production and a lot of waste.

The best cut trees are ones from sustainably sourced plantations.

While plastic Christmas trees were not the greenest option, they could be justified if used over a long period of time. That way you get the best value out of the resources that went into making it.

The most sustainable option you could go for, if available, is one of the trees that you can actually grow in a pot and you can use it time and time again.

When it comes to Christmas lights, we recommended LED to reduce power output. It’s better if they don’t flash as that uses more energy.

To avoid unwanted gifts ending up in the rubbish, give jars of food and vouchers for experiences rather than ‘things’.

Speaking of unwanted gifts…those table Christmas crackers. How about getting crafty again?

There are recycling options made from recycled cardboard that can be decorated however you’d like and filled with any gift inside you fancy. Here’s another chance to get children involved!

Also available are reusable linen ones and much more with a little googling.

When it comes to recycling, you can place steel and aluminium cans, plastic and glass bottles, aerosols and clean foil trays in your Wakefield Council brown bins.

Be sure to sort wisely and give recycled items a rinse first.

Everything else is for your green bins including food waste, polystyrene food containers and plastic bags.

When shopping, use recyclable bags and look for products that have recyclable packaging, like cream and custard cartons.

We can all make little changes, or greener choices. Together we can make a big difference, without losing any of the Christmas magic.

Perhaps this year more than others, it’s important that we all support local businesses at Christmas time. Keeping our Christmas spend in the region means economic viability for small businesses, maintains jobs, and ultimately leads to prosperity for all.

Besides which, there are unique businesses here that provide bespoke gift options that might not have come to your attention.

When considering what to buy, a good starting place is to consider your man’s interests or hobbies.

If your man is into sport, there are several specialist sporting businesses in our region that are worth investigating.

For example, rugby jerseys are always appreciated by keen supporters, as is golf equipment for the golfer and fishing gear for the angler.

We will be let outside onto the football pitch and golf course soon, so now’s the time to celebrate this.

Our advice for buying clothes for teenagers is ‘don’t do it!’, because what you think is perfectly respectable and reasonable will no doubt be dated and stifling to youngsters. For your husband or the older gentlemen in your life, it does depend what brands and fit they prefer.

Councillors to discuss future funding of Step -Up programme

Senior Wakefield councillors look set to invest £550,000 in the Council’s flagship Step-Up employment programme, to help residents and employers to access job opportunities.

Members of the Cabinet will be asked to agree to the funding to support the programme’s development and for support to be factored in to future council budget plans, subject to annual reviews.

Wakefield Council’s Step-Up Programme supports residents and employers to access job opportunities, qualifications, career progression support and recruitment in one place.

The Step-Up team helps people to find work, improve their skills or make a career change.

It also helps improve future job prospects and for employers to secure the skilled workforce.

Cllr Darren Byford Cabinet Member for Economic Growth and Regeneration, said: “Supporting people into employment has always been a priority and this programme is making a critical contribution to our districtwide recovery effort to the pandemic.”

Since January, the Step-Up programme has supported 663 residents.

The funding would enable the council to extend the programme to work with more residents with jobs to support them to progress.

Step-Up’s community-based approach to employment and skills development has been confirmed by independent researchers to be the most effective way to support people into work.

Pay It Forward for Wellness and Wellbeing

Emma Kirke has a driving passion for wellness and wellbeing for all.

Since qualifying in Osteopathic Medicine 20 years ago, Emma dreamt of establishing a multidisciplinary centre to assist a service user with their entire wellbeing and not just one facet of a person’s wellbeing.

The dream became reality in March 2020, and the location in Ossett was chosen for the ease of accessibility by both road and public transport.

The RCM Wellness Centre offers a complete wellbeing service in which the therapists work as a team referring within, to create the most appropriate and positive outcome for everyone.

The therapists work together for the wellbeing of each person, creating individual treatment plans.

Each person will benefit from a range of treatment models to create the best outcome for them. Not every treatment suits everyone, so having a range of experts creates a myriad of solutions.

“Our service users are keen to donate into a pay it forward fund to help those financially disabled by illness or redundancy or circumstance,” Emma describes.

“They have been so supportive, and this is something we wish to grow to help the surrounding community,” she said.

At launch they had pledges from local businesses to provide a treatment a month for someone. Emma said they are hoping to rekindle this aspect.

She acknowledges 2020 has been a difficult year for everyone, and businesses and individuals have suffered.

“We are here to help with physical, mental and emotional progress and are happy to chat to anyone about how we can help best and what would be the most appropriate course of treatment,” she said.

Centre therapists hope to see increased awareness of chronic illness and many other specialities in our community.

The centre also has a series of wellbeing courses and discussion topics to help sports clubs, community clubs, businesses and groups that may be in need.

“Our dream would be to support the community with advice, knowledge, hope, a point of contact as well as a resolution to their injury or wellbeing concerns,” Emma said.

What do you sell/provide? Wilkes Group is a family group of companies that provide workplace services to businesses across the UK. Vending, cleaning services and catering supplies (non-food) are our three divisions.

When was it established? Wilkes Group was established by my Grandfather, Gerald Wilkes in 1946.

Where are you located? Spa Street in Ossett since 2006.

What is the businesses greatest achievement so far? Ironically, I would have to say the way we have risen to the challenges of 2020. We have become a key supplier to the NHS supply chain for both our vending and PPE supplies.

Tell us about yourself:

Where are you from? Born and bred in Wakefield. As a kid I would work in the school holidays helping as a driver’s mate. I came back from working in Sydney aged 23 and joined the family company full time.

How did you get into this business? We had just launched our water cooler division which needed managing and taking online. It was the perfect fit. They were great fun years.

What do you enjoy most about your business? I enjoy expanding our services and seeing our divisions grow.

How do you unwind on weekends? My time is mostly taken up enjoying being with my family and my two spaniels Louis and Rufus. I enjoy the odd game of golf if the sun is shining and there is a cold beer at the end.

If you had one piece of advice for someone just starting out in business? My Dad always advised to be sensible in business. Do not overstretch. Keep your overheads down as much as possible. There will always be time for that nice car or office once it is deserved. Delegate and surround yourself with good people who you can trust. In turn they will reward you back with loyalty and years of happy service. This advice has worked for my brothers and I.

Live theatre postponed at the moment, hoping for a return around March

The Cluntergate Centre was to open on December 3, after lockdown was lifted.

Initially smaller movie showings were cancelled. Tier 3 restrictions resulted in all events being postponed.

The Red Letter Theatre Company’s performance of the play My Voice Was Heard, But It Was Ignored has been postponed until early 2021.

The synopsis is: ‘15-year-old Reece is roughly accosted by the police outside M&S. His young, Black teacher Gillian witnesses it all – but she doesn’t question or intervene in the disturbing scene that plays out.

As the hard and wet gravel embosses Reece’s face and the policeman’s knee digs into his back, his teacher stands frozen.

The consequences of her lack of action erupt the following day. Gillian finds herself locked in a classroom with her angry student. With no clear intent, Reece refuses to relinquish the key.

A gripping tussle of power and an urgent interrogation of racial identity, written by emerging playwright Nana-Kofi Kufuor and directed by Dermot Daly.’

The Cluntergate Centre hopes to stage it next year.

Town Hall renovations to be a full refurbishment

The Town Hall is an iconic landmark here in Ossett, but, although (in normal times) it is used by many groups, the building is in a sad state of repair and not fully accessible.

At last, after years of campaigning and help from Lisa Baugh (who looks after halls throughout the district), the Council have agreed to conduct a full refurbishment.

We are to have the roof (and clock tower) fully repaired, thus preventing further ingress of water which is constantly ruining the inside decor, and all stonework will undergo extensive restoration.

Early 2021, in the first phase, we will have our long-awaited lift fitted, allowing access for all to the whole upper floor, in particular to Ossett Library, which will move back upstairs to state of the art facilities.

Hopefully, this will be completed by the end of June.

The second phase is hoped to be finished by the end of September.

A few years ago, the front section of the balcony seats were recovered, thanks to sponsorship from residents and friends. The rear section will now be renovated and made more comfortable.

The main hall floor will be sanded and repolished, the theatre entrance (opposite the bottom of Kingsway) will be made to look as attractive and inviting as the main entrance and an external ramp will be installed.

The final and third phase will include all peripheral areas. It will hopefully be finished by the end of the year - toilets refurbished, tiled floors and walls mended, rotting wood replaced, decorated throughout and each area being made ‘fit for purpose’.

Ossett Town Hall will once again become the beautiful building it was meant to be.

Please be patient during the refurbishment.

The three-phased approach is intended so that the whole building need not be out of use for the whole time, but different sections will need to be closed at certain times.

Even though the usual Christmas lights ‘switch on’ events aren’t taking place, the Christmas lights will still shine bright across the district as part of #LightUp - a new celebration of light-inspired activities and initiatives.

The lights can be enjoyed by residents attending their normal essential shopping or physical activity, and those still attending school and work during this period. Photos are also being shared online, allowing residents to enjoy it and take part.

As part of this celebration, residents are encouraged to #LightUp their own homes, or businesses and share pictures online.

Cllr Jacquie Speight, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport, said: “The usual switch on events won’t take place this year but the Christmas lights will still be helping us get the festive period underway - even if it all feels quite different to usual.”

Where are you located? Our store is on Dale Street in Ossett, but we do most of our trade online.

What is the businesses greatest achievement so far? CBD Pharm has received positive reviews from many people suffering with various ailments, mainly interlinked issues sleep issues, depression and anxiety. However, our greatest achievements come from helping people with cancer, easing associated side effects, such as sleep, anxiety and depression. Our products are given to cancer patients at cost as I set the business up due to my interest in the interactions of CBD, Cancer and chemotherapy.

Where are you from? I was born and bred in the area and was one of the last school groups to attend North Ossett High School.

How do you unwide on weekends? I’m a fitness fanatic with a huge interest in mental health and the human mind.

Reminder to keep responsibly distanced

Wakefield Council is urging residents visiting the district’s parks to follow social distancing guidelines at all times. Parks have remained open during the current national lockdown to support the opportunity to exercise outdoors but it’s essential to stay two metres from each other.

Cllr Maureen Cummings, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Communities and Poverty said people are encouraged to get out and enjoy the district’s parks and stay healthy during the national lockdown, but need to follow the rules to help control the spread of the virus.

Therapist promotes walking of local routes for wellness

Ivor Lloyd is a local therapist and qualified counsellor specialising in depression management.

To motivate and inspire people during lockdown, he’s set up a YouTube channel following local walking routes.

“This has been a tough time for everyone; especially for those suffering from existing mental health issues such as anxiety and depression, this is why I decided to do something useful to help others.

“As a former sufferer of depression myself, I have developed several coping mechanisms which helped me to manage my illness. One of these mechanisms (or habits) is ‘walking’, which is something I now recommend to all of my clients.

Dedicate a light to support the hospice

There is still time to dedicate a light for Wakefield Hospice’s ‘Light up a Life’ appeal.

As part of the Christmas call, you’re invited to remember a loved one by dedicating a light on the Tree of Lights. The tree will be lit with hundreds of white lights shining for loved ones being remembered.

You’ll receive a personalised Light up a Life card showing your dedication, and your donation will help care for seriously ill people and their families. There’s no minimum donation and anyone can dedicate a light – you don’t need to have a connection to the hospice.

Dedications must be received at the hospice by 30 November to appear in the copy of the Book of Christmas Blessings that will be shared with appeal supporters.

During lockdown, the Ossett United lads are keeping in touch and looking to improve fitness and strength through their training schedules. We have taken the opportunity to have a quick catch up with captain Jack Stockdill.

Can you tell us a bit about your road to Ossett United? Where has your football career taken you so far? From the age of 8 to 18 I was at Bradford City, my hometown club. After leaving there I was with Guiseley for my first taste of non-league football. I had spells with Brighouse then Hyde before coming to Ossett.

What’s your most memorable game? The best game to date would be getting to the 1st round of the FA Cup proper with Hyde. It turned out to be a televised game on the BBC and despite the result it was a great occasion.

And are there any games you’d rather forget? Last season as a whole was one to forget. With the squad we had, especially towards the start of the season, it was very disappointing for everyone. This season Ramsbottom sticks out, it doesn’t get much worse than that. To get beat with the last kick of the game was hard to take after playing the way we did away from home.

What do you do outside of football? I love watching any football and love my boxing. I have a Ninemonth-old daughter now so my life’s changed a lot in the last year. I’m loving life being a dad and spending time with her.

Can you remember the first game you went to? I can’t actually remember the exact game but my first memories were going to watch Bradford City the season after they were relegated from the Premiership.

And that last one (not counting Ossett United)? I don’t get to many games now with playing every week so it will have to be going to watch my mate play for Eccleshill last season.

What’s the best thing about Ossett? I’ve met some great people involved with the club and ultimately I’m enjoying my football here.

Finally, any message for the OUFC faithful during lockdown? I hope everyone’s keeping safe and looking forward to getting back to Ingfield and helping us get some more points on the board when we can return.

Mo-tivated to challenge men’s health stigma

Movember is the annual month-long challenge held throughout November, with Mo Bros growing moustaches and getting support for it, as well as Mo Sisters joining in too to raise money for men’s health awareness.

While growing a wonderful moustache, Louis Walker from Ossett is running a ‘double Movember marathon’. He aims to complete 2.2 mile runs every hour for 24 hours over the weekend.

Louis is concerned that globally, the rate of male suicide is alarmingly high, particularly in men. Too many men are ‘toughing it out’, keeping their feelings to themselves and struggling in silence.

“I feel this is a great cause as men’s wellbeing gets easily overlooked because of the stigma attached to being strong, physically and mentally. Plus, it’s always great to take a back seat and learn more about what others are going through when we may not realise,” Mr Walker said.

Louis wanted to include a personal challenge as part of his fundraising.

“This goes for my professional and personal life too. I will race my son to the end of the supermarket aisle or whatever,” he said.

“Up until one year ago, I didn’t do that much. I was overweight and drank a lot socially. I never realised how much I did weigh as my career came first.”

“I am part of a local dad’s club that meets once a month and to help raise some funds, I gave myself six weeks to train for a triathlon. Since then I was hooked. I’ve lost over four stone and I’m hoping to complete an Ironman in the future.”

He would appreciate the company on the runs to get up momentum and awareness for the cause.

“Each hour I have a different friend running with me to keep me motivated. I’ve tried to encourage as many men as I can to come out and help me to raise funds and awareness,” Louis said.

What do you like best about Horbury & Ossett?

What does a typical day look like for you?
As a local Councillor no two days are the same.

It usually starts with checking overnight messages from social media and starting to go through emails received. I try to reply to all emails and messages within 24 hours as I feel this, it is only polite to do.

During the day there will be meetings with Council colleagues, community groups and residents. Although most of this year the meetings have been on ZOOM. I still try to meet with residents face-to-face if possible and usually outdoors. However, during this current lockdown, these are now only outdoor meetings if strictly necessary.

Where’s your favourite place to eat, and why?
This is a simple one to answer as I just love food! The choice across Horbury & Ossett is varied and suits all – great food, value and people.

Where’s your favourite place to meet friends, and why?
In the summer months anywhere outdoors.

Are you a member of, or do you support, any of the local clubs/organisations?
I am involved in lots of local organisations from the Royal British Legion to Horbury Village Partnership, from Friends of Illingworth Park to Friends of Horbury’s Parks, from Horbury Street Fayre to supporting our local schools.

Are you a Cat-person or a Dog-person?
I have two Siamese cats, DJ and Eva.

Anything else you would like to share with us?
Being a local Councillor to me means you should be easy to find and approachable. I hope that is what people think of me.

Uniting WF brings people together for men’s health

International Men’s Day (IMD) is celebrated worldwide on November 19 to highlight the positive value men bring to the world, their families and communities; highlighting positive role models and raising awareness of men’s well-being.

A large part of men’s health is being mentally healthy.

To this end, John Tremble has brought mental health and wellbeing to the forefront of the Ossett community, in establishing the Facebook page and group ‘Uniting WF’. The idea came to realisation last year when he lost two friends to suicide.

After his own battles with mental health, John wanted to help others. He sources many services that can help people and brings their resources together, to offer help in one place.

The ethos of the group is: Uniting WF mental health and wellbeing is a group where people in and around the WF postcode area can ask to post information and advertisements for local groups, events and activities that help to bettersupport mental health and wellbeing. The aim of Uniting WF is to bring people together.

“I started the group in July 2019 and we now have over 1,500 members and growing daily. Included in that number we have around 100 charities, non-profit organisations and private businesses. The Facebook group is private, and I feel this helps our members feel safer to speak if they want to,” John explained. John shared this advice for people who are suffering or know someone suffering with their mental health:

“Try just to listen, listen without judgement; show empathy and sympathy and most importantly don’t worry if you can’t help the person right away. Just being a listening ear can make a world of difference, we often ask people to reach out, but we all also remember to reach in.”

Another great thing that people can do are short suicide prevention training courses like ‘Assist and Safe’ run by Young Lives Consortium.

The first thing someone should do if they are struggling is to seek professional help, that can be a GP or health adviser. If they feel they may be in danger of harming themself or others they should go to A&E or call 999.

I sell all kinds of holidays from UK breaks to package holidays to tours, cruises, every kind of holiday you can think of. I also sell travel insurance and all the extras like excursions, airport parking etc, as well as gift experiences.

I started in August of this year so it’s only starting up but I have over 10 years experience as a travel agent

Where are you located?
I’m based from my home in Ossett

What is the businesses greatest achievement so far?
When I booked my first holiday from an offer I shared on Facebook and it wasn’t someone i knew or was local, it was amazing to reach someone else in another part of the country.

Where are you from?
I have lived in Ossett for 11 years now, but originally I was from Altofts.

How did you get into this business?
I have always worked in travel and I was coming to the end of my maternity leave with my 2nd child. My older child was starting full time school so I thought it was the perfect time to start my own business and with the support of Hays Travel, I was able to do that and carry on doing something I love and am very passionate about.

What do you enjoy most about your business?
I love booking my customers their dream holiday and showcasing all the amazing holiday offers on my social media pages.

What do you do to unwind after work or on weekends?
When in not working I’m usually running around after my 2 very active boys so don’t have a lot of time to unwind, but then I do it’s usually with a glass of wine or 2 and a good film or series.

If you had one piece of advice for someone just starting out in business, what would it be? To remember you have only just started and it takes time to build a business up.

Repair of scrapped bikes funds charities and groups

The Gav’s Bikes charity venture in Ossett has grown from Gavin Nelson- Auty working one bike he saved from scrap when his neighbour was going to throw it away.

“I rebuilt it and gave it away,” he said.

“After posting it on the Facebook group/page ‘You Know You Have Lived in Ossett’, a swell of people were talking about me and what I did with just that one bike.”

“I just started taking them and giving them away, and thought why not ask for donations? I donated it to Families and Babies Wakefield. I was taking two or three children at a time with their parents to Smyths Toys with £100 each to spend.” He decided to ask for reasonable prices to raise more funds and the bikes kept on coming and going. “It’s been crazy. I have raised well over £10,000 for various causes,” Gav said.

It’s a busy service as Gav puts 100% into each bike and makes them look great.

Mr Nelson-Auty has been nominated for the Pride of Britain Awards, a Local Community Hero award and a Leeds Utdaward. “Not that I have won anything but the fact people have nominated me is humbling,” he said. Bikes are donated from the local community and Yorkshire. Interest in Gav’s Bikes has come from Doncaster, Sheffield and Bradford.

Other local charities Gav’s Bikes supports are Stepping Stones Baby Bank in Ossett, GoFundMe pages, local Foodbanks and care homes.

“One of the most important ones for me was a huge donation to a very special young boy from Horbury who recently passed away. I was fortunate to meet him, and he will forever be in my heart. He was a true warrior, and his family are amazing,” he said.

He also supplies new bikes for children with disabilities and to nurseries.

Gav lost his Dad at 27. He and his family took it hard. “I wasn’t myself, angry, sad, lost. I felt that way for 10 years even losing my own little family. I was severely depressed and had been so close at times to giving up. Last year was probably the worst I had ever been. I battled on, and took this as an opportunity to keep busy,” he said.

“I have never felt as good as I do now, even before my Dad passed. I’m giving myself purpose and making people happy. You can’t beat that feeling and I’ll never stop.”

Volunteers needed for Ossett in Bloom

Ossett in Bloom is a community group powered by volunteers and donations, which ensures the town centre looks its best throughout the year, for both visitors and locals, by populating and maintaining planters with seasonal plants, flowers and herbs.

They have 144 wallflowers and pansies to plant currently, along with about 500 bulbs.

Volunteer help is needed to complete the job.

The group are also working to develop a ‘Purple Garden’ in support of pancreatic cancer awareness.

Ossett in Bloom encourages a sense of community by engaging with local schools, youth organisations and residential centres in the area.

Horbury Poppies honours those who gave the ultimate sacrifice

250 red and purple Celebrations chocolate lids were collected to make poppies for Remembrance Day.

A group of dedicated volunteers were recruited to cut poppy shapes from the container lids and smaller ones from the base of the sweets tins. The Poppy display started to take shape one cold Sunday morning and took many hours to create. On Saturday 7 November the installation started in Horbury’s Memorial Park. A team of five installed and put the finishing touches to the ‘Horbury Poppies’ on the flagpole. The red poppies are to honour those who gave the ultimate sacrifice with purple poppies remembering animals who gave their lives during conflicts.

The ‘Horbury Poppies’ display has been wonderfully received.

Man’s best friend to lean on as companions in 2020

I read somewhere that enquiries for dogs from rescue centres has increased by 600% over the last six months, similarly the price of puppies has increased dramatically, and if the evidence from my perambulations around the local parks is anything to go by, I would say that there must be some truth in this.

It would indeed seem that in this time of turmoil we have turned to man’s best friend to help us through. But why is it that we love dogs so much?

In a world where dog lovers wear rose tinted spectacles, dogs are the perfect companions, they do as they are told, don’t answer back, are always pleased to see you and ensure we exercise at least once a day. We can happily overlook muddy paw prints and chewed shoes; it’s give and take and dogs give far more than to allow these to be anything other than small inconveniences. But a dog is more than just a companion, I believe they can assist with mindset and healing. A few years ago, I struggled with chronic fatigue, it was physically and mentally debilitating. Keeping motivated was very hard, especially living alone. I decided during this time that I wanted a dog. A dear friend of mine went berserk: ‘You couldn’t get out of bed half the time, you couldn’t work, you couldn’t afford a dog.’

I knew that I needed the company and motivation as something to look after. We compromised, they got Maisie and I got her for doggy day care. It worked out perfectly.

During lockdown I resumed walking Maisie. Every afternoon she waits at the window to see my car coming. By the time I’ve parked, she’s waiting by the front door exuding so much excitement. Little can compare with watching a happy dog, careering around the park, chasing squirrels (she’s not been successful in eight years) tail wagging with sheer, unbridled joy.

My neighbour was so taken with Maisie, that he decided to get himself a dog. He maintains it’s changed his life and that he’s met more people, that he now considers friends, by walking Coco than he ever met at football practice or fishing. I know what he means. Another friend recently moved back from India to London and bemoaned that everyone is so unfriendly down in the big smoke, even the dog walkers. I replied, “You should move to Yorkshire, you can’t get your dog walked for friendly dog walkers up here!” I speak the truth. What starts out as a quick walk can end up taking a couple of hours.

I’ve met fellow dog walkers who’ve helped me with graphic design, invited me along to the pub, who’ve needed writing work doing and passed it my way, and I’ve sold several of my books. However, we don’t know each other by name, only the dog’s names which is how this next mention gets to stay moderately anonymous. The other afternoon in Carr Lodge Park, three of us had gathered and were discussing puppy progress when all of a sudden, over the brow of the hill, appeared three other dog walkers with five cockerpoos between them, a brown, two black and two white, Maisie (a large variety of cockerpoo) and Coco (a grey) ran over to join in the fun, ‘Oh look,’ said Coco’s owner, ‘There’s every coloured cockerpoo you can get, you could write another book, 50 Shades of Poo,’ And I think that, is the perfect place to wind this up, don’t you?

“We have had so many donations. The Hidden Gem Hair Stylist in Ossett and Cupalicious Cakes have been fantastic, as well as my friend Michael who has donated £100 worth of meat from his favourite butchers. The local community in general have been very generous,” said Gavin Nelson-Auty.

Money raised will go to Cap Care in Wakefield, Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice and a local care home.

Local Schools Unite in support of Children in Need

Accord Multi Academy Trust schools are gearing up to support Children in Need next Friday with a variety of activities to raise vital funds for this important charity.

The Trust schools; Horbury Academy, Ossett Academy and Accord Sixth Form College, Middlestown Primary and Horbury Primary will be hosting events, activities and competitions in collaboration with one another, celebrating and sharing each other’s success.

Horbury Academy are holding a sponsored 100-mile bike ride, a penalty shoot-out, sponsored read, bake sale and a name the bear competition.

Ossett Academy are running an art and literacy competition, making spotty masks for sale at a cost of £5, and holding a bakesale, quiz and a Pudsey Bear raffle. Horbury Primary Academy are set to join Joe Wicks as he completes his epic 24-hour PE challenge, along with age-appropriate physical activities for nursery-aged children. In addition, the academy is asking for a donation of £1 to wear non-uniform.

Over at Middlestown Primary, the school council decided on a pyjama day in return for a donation, plus a sponsored sports activity with each class participating in a sporting challenge to raise extra money for the charity.

Mia raises money for Blind Veterans UK inspired by her Grandad

Eight-year-old Mia Jackson-Goodall already aspires to join the Royal Airforce, inspired by her Grandad Brian Goodhall who served in Seuz Canal Crisis.

“As the second lockdown also prevented me from doing Remembrance Day, I asked my Mum if we could do something from home,” Mia said. “I had two Blind Veterans teddy bears and decided they needed a new home because who doesn’t love a cuddle from a teddy at times like this. My Mum did an online fundraiser, and we had a target of making £30 per bear, but within 24 hours we had made £100.”

Mia reminisced on memories of laying wreaths in her Girl Guides Uniform with her blind Grandad at the Ossett cenotaph, when the family gathered for a safe Remembrance Day ceremony in their home.

“Blind Veterans UK is important to me as it offers support to ex-Armed Forces who have lost some, or all of their sight. By raising money, I can help provide them with equipment that gives them some independence to do normal things like make a cup of tea or read as the equipment assists,” she said.

“My Grandad has a measuring device he puts on a cup. When he fills it up it makes this noise, but he still makes a mess occasionally.” When the names of the Fallen were unveiled on the Ossett Fallen Heroes Memorial, Mia was chosen to representing Dimplewell Infant School and read some names out of the Ossett Fallen.

“I have adopted two of them, and place a cross each year with their names on to remember them,” she said.

Brian lost his sight seven years ago due to macular degeneration, but Mia said it hasn’t stopped him being the “best Grandad ever!” “I’m also very proud of everything he does as losing his sight has not stopped him doing things he loves like archery, taking photos and even driving. He had an exhibition last year in Wakefield Cathedral and his photos were really good. He also goes to Llandudno to the Blind Veterans’ home and enjoys things like driving in a controlled environment,” she said.

How long have you lived here?
I’ve lived in Ossett for three years.

What do you love most about living here?
Living between Ossett and Horbury, it’s nice to have so many amenities on the doorstep with independent businesses and restaurants close by.

What does a typical day look like for you?
Working for Richard Kendall Estate Agents, my time at the moment is split between working from home and office. On my days off if I am not running errands, I am spending time with my two children at the park and drinking coffee!

Where’s your favourite place to eat, and why?
There are too many lovely places to choose from however for a family meal I think I would say Bar Biccari - it’s my daughter’s favourite. The food is good and the atmosphere is relaxed.

Where’s your favourite place to meet friends, and why?
We are so lucky to have so many nice parks to choose from in the area so often we will meet in Green Park or Illingworth Park, not forgetting the many Ossett Brewery pubs.

What’s your favourite shop, and why?
Again I couldn’t choose just one, but if I have a special occasion I can always find something in Precious Boutique. I love the recently opened The Clothes Hanger who is encouraging sustainable living by selling preloved, high end fashion.

where are you from? How long have you had the business?
I’ve lived in Ossett for 2 years, but originally from Crigglestone. I made and sold my first wreath in Spring 2019, but it really started taking off in Autumn 2020!

How did you get into this business?
Inspired by my mums beautiful home and garden, I wanted to incorporate flowers all year round, inside and outside the home. After she passed away in 2018, I found that this was a perfect way of making sure that she is always with me.

What do you enjoy most about your business?
I love seeing customer photos! Seeing the wreath hanging on their door or above their fireplace just makes my heart so full!

What do you do to unwind after work or on weekends?
After work you can find me tucked in bed watching a documentary with my boyfriend and drinking tea.. With biscuits of course!

Keep fit without equipment

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is a tough challenge during a winter lockdown, the gyms are closed and the nights are cold and dark. Many of us got in the habit of regular walks or cycles in the summer but this time of year wine, chocolate and Netflix seem all the more appealing. It is possible however to do an effective home workout with zero equipment. Gavin Wood, owner and head trainer of Team Esteem Fitness in Wakefield designed this 30-minute workout to suit all levels, which requires no equipment and can be performed in any space.

Warm Up - 5 Minutes

Here we just want to get the body moving and the heart rate slightly elevated. Start with walking on the spot and gradually lifting your knees higher each time building into a jog. Next gently roll your shoulders building into full arm rotations.

Sprint on the spot - 30 seconds

Stand with your feet hip-width apart and arms by your sides. Keep your back straight and head up, pump your arms and lift your knees high and fast.

Squat - 15 Reps

Start with your feet just wider than shoulder width, with your toes turned out slightly. Hinge at the hips to push your bottom back and lower down until your thighs are parallel to the floor, in a squat position. Tip: if you struggle to squat effectively use a chair.

Push-ups - 15 Reps

Start with hands on the floor directly under your shoulders, then lift-up onto your toes. ensuring that your back stays flat. Lower your body so your chest gets as close to the floor as possible and push back up. For an easier option, drop to your knees, or for real beginners perform against a worktop or wall.

Plank - 30 seconds

Lie on your front with your fists clasped, elbows pushed into your sides by your ribs, forearms on the floor and toes tucked under. Push your bodyweight up so that it’s resting on your forearms and feet, in a straight line parallel to the floor. Hold this position. Make this easier resting on your knees.

Repeat these 4 or 5 times in 20 minutes for a great mood boosting fat busting workout. If you struggle to squat use a chair and for the push ups feel free to use knees, against the wall or a worktop.

Cool down - 5 min
Walk around and gently stretch.

Wakefield Council is geared up and ready for winter weather.

If severe weather hits the district, the Council’s priority is to keep the main roads moving and ensure that essential services stay open. The Council has over 4,700 tonnes of grit stockpiled, and will focus on its priority routes, which are used by 90% of the district’s traffic. Teams are on-call round the clock, to monitor the weather and get the gritting teams out when they are needed – day or night.

Residents are also being asked to lend their support during wintry weather conditions, by volunteering as Snow Wardens, to provide vital support, helping to keep pavements and areas around their homes clear of snow and ice. Snow Wardens will be asked to join forces to help their neighbours and more vulnerable citizens who can’t help themselves by clearing pavements, drives and local streets whilst the Council focuses on its priority routes.

Cllr Matthew Morley, Cabinet Member for Planning and Highways at Wakefield Council, said: “Our current army of Snow Wardens do a fantastic job in supporting their local communities and we’d like to invite more people to join in the team effort and help their neighbours and our more vulnerable residents.

“The Council are prepared as we can be to tackle the winter weather. If we have the help of our residents, we can all pull together to keep our district moving and look out for our neighbours, if bad weather hits.”

The Council will provide Snow Wardens with a bag of salt to use on public footpaths and streets, which can be replenished throughout the season. If needed, they can also collect a snow shovel and a fluorescent ‘Snow Warden’ jacket. Training and safety advice is given to ensure all volunteers work as safely as possible. There are also over 340 grit bins across the district, which will be restocked over the winter as needed for use on the roads.

If you’re out enjoying our parks and open spaces, hopefully you’ll notice that Horbury and South Ossett is looking cleaner.

In September and October, over 330 bags of litter were collected by West Wakefield Wombles. Our group ‘Wombles’ only last an hour, and we can collect over 50 bags at times not counting all the fly tipping. We ask if a mask or sweet wrapper falls out of your pocket, that you put it in a bin before it blows away. If you have a dog, you will know how to pick up things without getting your hands dirty using a

poo bag. We urge the community to be on board and bring a spare poo bag on your walks. Make sure to put them in a bin and sanitise or wash your hands afterwards. Consultation responses in regard to Green Park

Green Park is an area of open green space on the north-western side of Horbury. John Henry Green gifted this land to the people of Horbury in 1925 along with Green Park Avenue and the land that Primrose Hall is built on.

An independent feasibility study investigated and reported on the possibility of the park’s management changing from Wakefield MAC to two charities Horbury Commons Lands Trust and Horbury Heritage Trust Ltd. It’s hoped a currently circulating public survey will gauge public opinion about the park.

Horbury Commons Lands Trust (HCLT) has been circulating a consultation survey, to assess their taking over from Green Park Wakefield MDC as trustees for the Green Park Charity.

Horbury Heritage Trust Ltd (a registered charity and the trustees of Primrose Hall) has been concerned about mismanagement for years. The opportunity to do something came possible when the organisation commenced working alongside HCLT. HCLT and Green Park Working Group Chairman, Michael Cudworth said 50% of the survey results so far paint the park as ‘boring’ and ‘neglected’, with access issues and no path network or seating. For its size and proximity to housing, the park has significant underuse and significant potential for improvement to plug a real gap in public space provisions, Mr Cudworth said.

“The consultation suggests ideas to improve this, which we formulated with Groundwork who completed our feasibility study,” he said.

Some ideas suggested have been a pump cycle track, junior play area, multi- use games area, one-kilometre-long perimeter walking and running path, trim trail as well as working out equipment and information posts.

“There is an opportunity to increase biodiversity within the landscape through tree and shrub planting and add a quieter area with a small meadow and community orchard,” Mr Cudworth said.

Results of the public consultation will be analysed by the HCLT and the Friends of Green Park group and fed backtoGroundworktoformulateafinal masterplan.

“This year more than any other has shown how much communities value good quality parks and green spaces. Our aim is to create a vibrant, well used park that provides a space to walk, play, cycle, relax and play formal and informal sports and games to improve physical and mental wellbeing,” Mr Cudworth said.

“As we approach 300 responses to our consultation survey it is apparent that the scheme has widespread community support, with a huge majority of people responding saying that they would visit the park more often and for longer periods if it were improved.”

The questionnaire can be seen on the Primrose Hall website www.primrosehall.com, via the Green Park tab. The closing date is Monday 23 November. The Trust have commenced discussions with WMDC and expressed an interest in taking over the management of some areas of the park.

Where’s your favourite place to eat, and why? (in Horbury or Ossett) Hard to choose with such a great selection! Though if I were ever stuck for food or had a friend staying with me, I know I could pop down to Ego, or order in a pizza from one of the great Italian restaurants here.

Where’s your favourite place to shop, and why? As a book-lover, I’d have to say Rickaro Books, which is now Darling Reads.

What do you sell/provide? Ladies clothes and accessories from everyday pieces to wearable investment pieces.
When was it established? I started the business in 2017 after coming together with group of friends and seeing a gap in the market in Ossett for a space to combine fashion, hair & beauty.
Where are you located? In a converted mill opposite Holy Trinity School on Church Street.
What is the businesses greatest achievement so far? Growing and surviving through the ongoing pandemic, it’s taught me to just go for it and not hold back on your dreams, don’t say no and say yes to as much as feasible.

Tell us about yourself:

Where are you from? How long have you had the business? I live in East Ardsley, but a Welsh girl at heart, and started the business from scratch in March 2017.
How did you get into this business? I was a fashion designer & stylist for over 10 years before starting the business so it was a natural progression to opening my own store after seeing the gap in the market to create a comfortable space to shop and offer style advice for free.
What do you enjoy most about your business? Being able to help women feel confident and happy in their outfit choices, some people say fashion is fickle but it’s amazing what a great outfit can do for a person’s self esteem.
What do you do to unwind after work or on weekends? Sleep, eat and spend time with my family and friends, I like to have Sunday Fundays as that’s my only day off - generally a walk, good food and some wine!
If you had one piece of advice for someone just starting out in business, what would it be? Research your market and don’t be afraid to ask questions and take advice from people in the know, I have friends who have been in the same business for a lot longer than me and they have been an invaluable support to me over the last year.

Lockdown, a challenge met by Boys Brigade

Boys’ Brigade is a worldwide organisation that is committed to seeing lives enriched by supporting children and young people.

At 1st Ossett Boys’ Brigade, we meet at The King’s Way Church on a Wednesday evening in term time. It is made up of 12 amazing leaders volunteering their time to around 40 boys. We provide a programme of activity across four age groups aged from five to 18 years.

Each of the programmes provides fun and exciting activities with opportunities for children and young people to be recognised for their participation and achievement through awards. Typical activities include sports, crafts, cooking and visits. There are also yearly residential camps.

Our 2019/2020 session has been like no other. Since March, we met every Wednesday using online video conferencing platforms. These meetings meant we could stick to some sort of routine and gave us all some form of normality during these unprecedented times. It helped our young people’s mental health by keeping them in regular contact with each other while schools were closed and face-to-face BB meetings suspended. The children took part in a wide range of activities - scavenger hunts, bingo, baking, a build a skyscraper challenge, quizzes - all from the safety of their own homes.

Thanks to the leaders and the church for all their work in providing a safe return to face to face activities, 1st Ossett was able to reopen its doors for the month of October. We have a fantastic programme of socially distanced indoor activities lined up plus the children will take in some fun outdoor activities such as a nighttime walk and a sensory scavenger hunt.

Ossett United defeated at home by Workington

On the back of a hard-fought first home win and a very good point away at Marske, Ossett United were ready for Workington in front of a sell-out crowd.

With Jack Normanton up front ably assisted by attacking midfielders pressing the Workington defence, Ossett made a strong start.

On 10 minutes, Jack Stockdill headed a Haswell corner into the Workington keeper’s hands.

Workington took over, forcing three consecutive corners, without delivering. A cagey 15 minutes followed, with United using both flanks well as the half progressed, but without the killer final ball or enough bodies to convert. The referee’s book dominated as the first half wound down, with no fewer than five players receiving yellows.

Four Ossett players received bookings in what was generally a clean-fought half. Workington’s Scott Allison converted a cross from the left in the first half’s final minute.

Three minutes into the second period Max Dearnley got a hand to Reuben Jerome’s shot, but couldn’t quite keep it out.

A third Workington goal was headed home by Brad Hubbold on 56 minutes. Workington’s Symington and Wooding-Holt got the first cards of the half, as Ossett’s pressure built.

A Normanton cross towards Waud resulted in a corner. Ossett’s best move of the half involved Hardaker, Normanton and Green connecting well, with Green’s attempt from the right of the box just clearing the Workington crossbar.

At 83 minutes, a lunging tackle from Ossett substitute Reggie Waud brought the next cards. Some maintain it was a deserved red, some say more a yellow. We didn’t go on to win the game with ten men.

Two minutes later Casson became the final Workington yellow to round off an interesting afternoon for the man in black, with nine yellows and a straight red. Workington converted their chances though, were well-drilled and showed quality in possession, deserving to take the three points back home to West Cumbria.

Ossett Rotary helping community even in such uncertain times

Rotary is one of the world’s best-kept secrets. Whilst many recognise the name and logo, few outside the clubs know much about what Rotary actually does. So, I would like to tell you a bit about Rotary in Ossett.

We have 30 members with a common purpose, to support the local community and wider charitable causes. The club fundraises by organising all kinds of events and projects, sometimes working with other Rotary clubs and local organisations. The current pandemic has put a hold on meetings but we continue to ‘meet’ regularly via Zoom. We delivered eight huge cakes to local key workers in early lockdown; including the fire service, police, ambulance service, care homes, and GP surgeries as a thank you for their dedication to our community.

Most of this year’s planned activities have had to be postponed but thanks to the generosity of club members, who have gifted the money normally used to pay for lunches, the club has been able to make significant donations to the Wakefield Community Awareness Programme (CAP), Wakefield Hospice and the Ossett Resource Centre Foodbank.

In a normal year, we would be supporting the Gawthorpe May Day parade, the Ossett Summer Gala, Scarecrow Festival, and Christmas Fair.

Ossett Rotarians support the international Rotary End Polio Campaign by fundraising. World Polio Day was October 24th and our Club held a ‘Virtual Pie & Peas Night’. The food was supplied by local businesses and delivered (socially distanced) by Rotarians to homes, ready to be heated and enjoyed.

Over the past five years, the Rotary Club of Ossett has raised over £42,000 for many good causes. Every pound raised goes to charity but not everything we do is about fundraising. It’s also a great way to be social.

Pro Golfers visit Low Laithes Golf Club

In a first for our club, we welcomed 56 professional and low amateur players for the “Low Laithes Classic” on September 16, which was part of the newly formed 2020 Pro Tour. Organisers and players were impressed by our level of club management, the course condition, particularly the lightning quick greens, and the number of members who volunteered on the day.

The event was won by two-time US Open participant John Parry from Harrogate with an impressive 65, 6 under par. Low Laithes amateur Matthew Wright impressed by beating many of the professionals with a 72. The live stream from the day can be viewed on the Low Laithes Golf Club’s facebook page. Once the strokeplay event was completed, the top 16 shoot out was a knockout for £500. Nick Poppleton from Wath was nearest to the pin (from 100 yards), and advanced to the next round.

Another event has been booked for 2021. We hope it can be a bigger event, and that spectators will be able to see professionals in action.

Cricket is the winner for Rich Pyrah

Yorkshire’s professional bowling coach Rich Pyrah grew up in Ossett, where he lived and breathed sport. His cricket career grew from slogging it out in the local cricket club’s nets.

For a small town there is some great sport on. There is such a hub of sport down at Ossett Cricket Club for all abilities and ages for boys and girls.

Rich’s favourite thing about growing up in the area was the sporting culture: “Having the option of all the sports clubs. There are so many good ones covering every sport. I know the two football clubs have merged in the last few years, but for a small town there is some great sport on.”

He believes local cricket is a great start point for younger players too, commending Ossett Cricket Club for its abilities to attract boys and girls of all ages to play.

T20 was my favourite format to play in, I loved the fast pace and big crowds. Your skills had to be good and to be able to think quick which suited me. Probably the closest you get to professional football.

His family had a connection to the club and Rich spent many of his days there. He played U13s, and then senior cricket at 12-years-old for the Ossett Second team as well as a few years of first team cricket, before he moved to Yorkshire County Cricket Club (CCC) full time at the age of 16.

He attended Ossett School and spent his time playing every sport he was able to. Despite football trials at Bradford City and Sheffield Wednesday and playing for Ossett Sporting Boys Club up until he was 15, cricket continued as his main love.

This early experience with cricket led to a 15-year professional career, where he amassed 300 professional games. In 12 seasons, Pryah played 51 first-class matches for Yorkshire and flourished in limited-overs format. He scored 1084 runs and took 140 wickets in 118 List A matches. He finished up as the lead wicket taker in Twenty20, with 21 wickets in 2011 before retiring.

I didn’t really set out to achieve one main thing, all I wanted to do was play sport. But looking back having won two County Championships back to back, and finishing as Yorkshire’s leading T20 wicket taker…I’m very proud.

In the 2011 County Championship, he rescued Yorkshire from 45 for 8 with a 117 batting score.

Playing ODIs or Twenty20 matches aren’t the career highlights for Rich. His proudest moment is receiving a Yorkshire Cap: “You get awarded your cap by the club when they feel as though you deserve it through performance and loyalty to the club over a number of years. My cap number is 167. It puts it into perspective when there has been thousands of cricketers play for Yorkshire and to be the 167th to be capped is very special.”

His Dad, Indian import to Ossett Sameer Dinghe and Kevin Sharp are his biggest influences. “Kev played for Yorkshire CCC and ended up down at Ossett CC as their professional, Kev went on to be my batting coach at YCCC. I still speak to him now for advice and especially as a young coach,” he said.

Rich says there’s a long list of players from who he enjoyed the game with, including: Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, Adil Rashid, Kane Williamson, Michael Vaughan, Darren Lehmann, Yuvraj Singh, Glenn Maxwell, Darren Gough and Aaron Finch. “The one that stands out is Darren Gough, he came back to Yorkshire CCC as captain in 2008, he really helped me kick on in my career and backed me (as he reminds me every time I see him!),” he said.

Rich says family and sport are his life. He has twin eight-year-old girls who keep him very busy at home. He also credits his father among others as having a big impact on his progression as a young player, with his father throwing for him for hours in the nets at Ossett Cricket Club.

Rich’s advice to young cricketers wanting to pursue a career in cricket is: “Get the most out of yourself, train with intensity and have fun. With the way cricket is going now, I would encourage young batters to strike the ball and hit it 360 degrees, and bowlers to have all the funky skills as well as bowling quick.”

Make words count this month during WordFest

WordFest is a new event to celebrate the power of words, to encourage young people and families to explore their creativity. This community-based festival blends digital activities, small scale events and community library activities and experiences, all promoting the message: ‘Make Words Count’.

All the district’s libraries are turning into WordLabs, with special classes taking place each week – so you’ll definitely try something new! There will be challenges to write a haiku about climate change, recommend favourite books, share the best Yorkshire-isms and make a word from whatever material people want. WordFest will also feature The Makaton Rhyme Challenge - an entertaining and enjoyable way to introduce children and families to some simple sign language by using rhymes. There’ll be rhyme sheets to help, a certificate to collect, a Makaton sign of the week challenge and virtual story times.

If it’s not possible to visit a local library, there will be plenty of opportunities to join in online.

Wakefield Hospice launches ‘Light up a Life’ appeal

Wakefield Hospice is inviting everyone to remember a loved one this Christmas by dedicating a light on the Tree of Lights for its annual ‘Light up a Life’ appeal. The hospice will send supporters a personalised card for each dedication, and each name will appear in the Book of Christmas Blessings to be displayed at Wakefield Cathedral over the festive period. This year everyone who dedicates a light will also receive a small copy of the Book of Blessings so they can view their dedication at home.

The hospice’s ‘Light up a Life’ service, which is usually attended by hundreds of supporters, will be held online this year in line with social distancing guidelines. Everyone is invited to join the virtual service. Details will be sent to supporters in a home pack which local companies are generously supporting.

Susan Wright, Ward Sister at the hospice, said, ‘Christmas is a time of celebration and sharing but it can also be a difficult time when you are parted from your loved ones, especially this year. The ‘Light up a Life’ appeal gives us all the opportunity to remember family and friends who are absent, and every donation will help fund the hospice’s services. We are doing our upmost to keep our patients, families, staff, volunteers and supporters safe during this challenging period. This year is our 30th anniversary and we need the local community’s support now more than ever. We are still here, sharing the care for people affected by life-limiting illnesses.’

Horbury Tennis Club - 2020 LTA National Development Coach comes to Horbury!

Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) National Development Coach of the Year, Alice Robson has recently started coaching at Slazenger Tennis Club, based at Slazenger Sports and Social Club in Horbury.

On Thursday 30 July, tennis coach and former Fed Cup captain Judy Murray OBE, announced that Alice Robson was the National Winner. Over 500 nominations were put forward for this award so it is a fanatic achievement.

Alice earnt her LTA award for introducing the coaching programme and growing it to 70 players attending each week in Ackworth. As an advocate for increasing female participation in the sport, Alice developed innovative sessions including a Mother and Daughters Tennis Festival, all the while mentoring new coaches and engaging more than 1,800 school children.

Alice commented: “To be recognised for something I am so passionate about was incredible, with the added bonus to have won the award above coaches who have done astonishing work. I am so proud of Ackworth Tennis Club, it’s amazing to see how far we have come. In 2018 we had 17 members. Since the introduction of the coaching programme we have now got over 200 members. I would love to see Slazenger Tennis Club develop in the same way and get tennis thriving in Horbury.”

Alice has started a Sunday morning coaching programme at Slazenger. There is coaching available for junior players, adult beginners and intermediate players.

It has been a successful summer at Horbury: membership over the last three months has more than tripled, there have been over 600 courts bookings and 60 children attended summer camps. The club has recently started weekly social tennis, where members can play with and against each other. Slazenger members are entitled to book one of the three acrylic courts for free, can receive reduced rate coaching, attend social tennis and are entered in our club’s Wimbledon Ballot.

Ossett United supporters walk for mental health charity

It’s 3 o’clock on Saturday. We’re gearing up for the first league game of the season, the first since March. After the last few months this is the stuff of dreams for football fans, isn’t it?

Well, it could be, but this is the wrong 3 o’clock. In the eerie small hours of Saturday I’m standing outside Ingfield. Supporters’ club members are walking to the first away game for charity. Our opponents are Mossley, some 30 miles away on the other side of the Pennines.

We depart in darkness. Luke and Chris are the walk organisers, who are passionately involved in our Supporters’ Club. “We used to run the bar at Albion,” Luke tells me, “and often we’d give the bar takings straight to the manager after the game, scraping together money to pay the players.” Chris adds, “The financial challenges we’ve overcome at Ossett United would have sent many clubs two or three levels higher than us out of business. The fans have pulled us through.” That United still exists is thanks to colossal support from fans and the surrounding community.

Along with Chris and Luke the other pacesetter is Liam, a half-marathon running machine. Then there’s Richard, who won the Supporters’ Club quiz last night before kipping for a couple of hours in the Can Bar until the start of the walk.

The towpath of the Huddersfield Narrow Canal is a delight, though I overhear Luke whisper the next bit will break some of us. Old Mount Road, climbing out of Marsden into the Pennine wilderness was the most relentless, unforgiving incline of the day. The amazing views are scant comfort. Heather moorland takes us to Diggle in Lancashire, where Ossett Town Juniors Secretary Debbie is waiting, car packed with refreshments to assist me as I hobble down the canal towpath to Mossley. After 30 miles the Commercial Hotel in Mossley is a welcome sight, as is the Hopmeister. Unable to walk another step and with Seel Park up another steep hill, I am saved by Aiden Chippendale, scorer of United’s second goal in that West Riding Cup Final. Without a game for Colne today, Chippy had decided to watch his old pals. Driving me up to the ground the ex-Ossett winger explains that he can barely watch the Premiership, loving non-league instead for its close community spirit. And giving a lift to a knackered stranger because of a mutual love encapsulates everything that is very great about non-league. Thanks mate. Mossley is one of my favourite grounds: it’s old school non-league charm, with great fans and a couple of lovely old stands framed by the Pennine hills. When the right 3 o’clock finally arrives Mossley dominate, applying pressure with and without the ball. As I plonk my aching bones behind the goal for the second half it’s a relief to be just one goal behind. In the second half, Mossley score again. The game passes by in a bit of a blur. I’m not sure whether it’s fatigue or the Hopmeister. Outside the ground we walkers gather for the train journey home when Ossett manager Wayne Benn emerges. Honest and forthright as always, Benno tells it like it is. “You should have heard it in there after the game. I told them there are people out there who’ve walked 30 miles to be here today. And this is how you repay them!” What we love about non-league football again encapsulated in a scene on a late summer’s day in the Pennine hills.

“Are you not walking back?” shouts one Mossley fan in jest, “You’ve only done half the job!”

By day I work for PwC in Leeds, by evening I’m the Ossett United club secretary. I’m responsible for player registrations, social media and match day programme amongst other things.

The Ossett Cricket Club has been operating since 1868 when the land was left in trust. The grounds’ offering has expanded in recent years. We now welcome sporting disciplines such as football and rugby union, offering the chance for all to participate on any level they desire. Rounders, snooker, bowls and golf sides affiliate with our club too.

We offer our function rooms for corporate events, wedding receptions, birthdays, wakes and other occasions catering up to 150 people.

At present we have two services each Sunday morning. A service of Morning Prayer or Holy Communion in church is at 10am.
